Rank on Google. Win the AI Overview. Get named by ChatGPT.
Three disciplines, one strategy. Traditional SEO earns the ranking. Answer engine optimisation earns the direct answer. Generative engine optimisation earns the citation inside AI tools — the place a growing share of Singapore buyers now start.
The short answer
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO earns rankings in traditional search results. AEO earns the direct answer in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO earns mentions and citations inside generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. All three share technical foundations, but each needs a different content structure.
They are not competing strategies and you do not choose between them. GEO without SEO rarely works, because the pages AI tools cite are overwhelmingly pages that already rank. What changes is what you do on top of a sound SEO foundation.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in results | Be the answer | Be the source cited |
| Surface | Google, Bing | AI Overviews, snippets, voice | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini |
| Content shape | Depth and relevance | Question, then direct answer | Quotable, factual, attributable |
| Key signal | Links and authority | Structured data | Entity consistency |
| Measured by | Position and traffic | Snippet and Overview capture | Citation and mention frequency |
Definitions
Two terms most Singapore agencies still cannot define.
What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?
AEO is the practice of structuring content so a search engine can extract a direct, accurate answer from it. It relies on question-led headings, self-contained answers of roughly forty to sixty words placed immediately beneath them, clean semantic HTML, and schema.org structured data such as FAQPage and HowTo.
The practical test is simple: could a machine lift one paragraph from your page, show it on its own with no surrounding context, and have it still be true and useful? If your answer only makes sense after three paragraphs of preamble, it will not be chosen.
What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of earning mentions and citations inside generative AI tools. It depends on clear entity definition, factual consistency across the web, server-rendered HTML that AI crawlers can read, and content that is genuinely quotable rather than padded.
There is no ranking position to check, which unsettles people used to SEO dashboards. Success is measured by asking the AI tools directly, repeatedly and systematically, and tracking how often your business is named.
The programme
What we actually do, in order.
Every engagement follows this sequence. We do not sell content production to a site that is technically broken, because it will not work and you will have paid for it.
Technical foundation
A full crawl and audit: indexation, canonicals, redirect chains, Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, broken internal links, orphan pages and render-blocking JavaScript. We fix what is stopping the site being read before anything else.
- Crawl, index and canonical remediation
- Core Web Vitals and rendering fixes
- robots.txt, XML sitemap and llms.txt
- AI crawler access verified, not assumed
Entity & structured data
Teaching machines what your business is. Organisation and LocalBusiness schema, consistent name, address and phone across every directory, and a factual profile that matches wherever else you appear online.
- Schema.org markup across all templates
- NAP consistency audit and cleanup
- Google Business Profile optimisation
- Entity reconciliation across third-party sources
Question research
Not just keywords — the actual questions your buyers ask, including the long conversational ones people type into ChatGPT that never appear in a keyword tool. We map each to the page that should own it.
- Keyword research for the Singapore market
- Question and prompt mining
- Competitor and citation gap analysis
- Topic-to-URL mapping
Answer-first content
Content written in the shape machines extract and humans still want to read: a real question as the heading, a complete answer directly underneath, then the depth and nuance for the reader who needs it.
- Pillar pages and supporting articles
- FAQ and comparison content
- On-page optimisation and internal linking
- Existing content rewritten to answer-first structure
Authority
Digital PR, citations and genuine mentions on sources that AI models are trained on and that Google trusts. No link farms, no private blog networks, no paid link schemes — those are a liability with a delayed fuse.
- Digital PR and earned mentions
- Local and industry directory citations
- Author and expertise signals (E-E-A-T)
Measure across all three
Rankings and organic traffic for SEO. Snippet and AI Overview capture for AEO. And for GEO, systematic prompt testing across the major AI tools to track how often you are named, and what they say when they name you.
- Rank tracking and Search Console reporting
- AI Overview and featured snippet monitoring
- AI citation and share-of-voice tracking
- Monthly report with a clear recommendation
Local search
If you serve Singapore, local is half the battle.
For any business with a physical address — including ours at Havelock Road — the Google local pack sits above the organic results and takes a large share of the clicks. It is also the signal AI tools lean on hardest when someone asks for a recommendation "near me".
- Google Business Profile setup, verification and optimisation
- Category selection and service area configuration
- Name, address and phone consistency across every directory
- Review generation strategy and response management
- Location page with LocalBusiness and GeoCoordinates schema
- Local content targeting Singapore districts and neighbourhoods
Questions
SEO, AEO and GEO FAQs
How long does SEO take to work in Singapore?
Expect three to six months for early movement and six to twelve months for meaningful results in competitive categories. Technical fixes can show effect within weeks; content and authority compound over quarters.
Any agency promising page one within a month is describing a paid advertisement, not SEO.
Can you guarantee a number one ranking on Google?
No, and neither can anyone else. Nobody outside Google controls the ranking algorithm, so a guaranteed position is not a promise anyone is able to keep.
What we do commit to is the work itself: the technical remediation, the content produced, the structured data implemented, and transparent reporting against the metrics we agree at the start. If a competitor guarantees you a position, ask them what happens contractually when they miss it.
Is AEO going to replace SEO?
No. It sits on top of it. The pages that get pulled into AI Overviews and cited by generative tools are overwhelmingly pages that already rank well organically — strong SEO is the entry requirement, not the alternative.
What has genuinely changed is that ranking is no longer sufficient on its own. You now also need the content structured so a machine can lift a clean answer from it.
Does my website need to be fast for AI search?
Speed matters less to AI crawlers than rendering does. Most do not execute JavaScript at all, so content that only appears after a JavaScript bundle runs is invisible to them no matter how quickly it loads.
Server-rendered HTML is the single most important technical requirement for GEO. It is also why we build sites the way we do.
How do you measure something as vague as "getting cited by AI"?
With a fixed prompt set. We agree a list of the questions a real buyer would ask an AI tool in your category, run them on a schedule across the major platforms, and record whether you are mentioned, in what position, and what is said about you.
It is not as clean as rank tracking, and we will not pretend otherwise. It is measurable, repeatable, and considerably better than guessing.
We already have an SEO agency. Can you audit their work?
Yes. We do independent audits and will give you a straight assessment, including when the answer is that your current agency is doing a good job. We would rather be honest than win the account on a misleading diagnosis.
Let's begin
Find out where you actually stand.
We will audit your technical SEO, check whether AI crawlers can read your site, and test what ChatGPT and Perplexity currently say about your category. You get the findings either way.
